International accompaniment has been used for many years to protect threatened hman rights activists throughout the world. Mahony and Eguren present examples from Sri Lanka Sri Lanka (srē läng`kə) [Sinhalese,=resplendent land], formerly Ceylon, ancient Taprobane, officially Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, island republic (2005 est. pop.  and Latin America (chiefly Guatemala and El Salvador, but also Haiti and Colombia) to show how Peace Brigades International Peace Brigades International (PBI) is an NGO, founded in 1981, which "protects human rights and promotes nonviolent transformation of conflicts". It primarily does this by sending volunteers to accompany human rights activists whose lives are at risk in areas of conflict and  volunteers create "breathing space" for individuals and groups working nonviolently for social justice by providing support and accompaniment to threatened activists.
