The award was presented on Oct. 4, in Dallas at a special ceremony held during the OSA's annual meeting. Prior to joining Ultratech, Markle spent 19 years with Perkin-Elmer Corp., where he led the invention and development of the Micralign series of scanning projection aligners, and the Micrascan step-and-scan, a deep-ultraviolet lithography system. In addition to holding over a dozen patents, Markle developed the solid Fabry Perot filters used in the hydrogen alpha telescopes utilized by the Skylab project, as well as the Fraunhofer Line Discriminator dis·crim·i·na·tor n. 1.
