Ugly ad.

I just received my July issue, and my jaw dropped to see the ad on page twenty-three.

Surely this fell through the cracks! The challengestickers.com ad cannot possibly meet your editorial standards. In particular, the partially visible one that says, "Hey Muhammad!" with an ugly, stereotyped drawing of an Arab? Yikes yikes

That the purchasers of the ad have a right to print such bumper stickers is beyond question. That The Progressive would allow them to hawk such slogans in your pages is surely not what you intended.

Rochester, Vermont Rochester is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States, created by Vermont charter on July 30, 1781 and later expanded when the town of Philadelphia, Vermont was divided up among its neighbors. The population was 1,171 at the 2000 census.

The Editor responds: Because of our bedrock principle of free speech, The Progressive has long had a policy of allowing advertisers to say whatever they want short of libel libel 1) n. to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of  or other potential illegalities. We trust our readers are sophisticated enough to recognize the distinction between what we publish as editorial matter with our imprimatur, and the advertising we carry, some of which, like the ad in question, we, too, find loathsome.
