Bill Gates' Keynote Features Ubicom-Based High Definition Media Bridge

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  -- Ubicom[R], Inc., a leading provider of communications processor and software solutions, has developed a wireless High Definition Media Bridge reference design that delivers reliable and easy-to-use HD video distribution in the home. The design combines the ease of use and performance requirements of Microsoft Windows See Windows.

(operating system) Microsoft Windows - Microsoft's proprietary window system and user interface software released in 1985 to run on top of MS-DOS. Widely criticised for being too slow (hence "Windoze", "Microsloth Windows") on the machines available then.

at the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2007, reliably bridges the networking gap between high definition video on the PC to digital media players such as an Xbox 360[TM] video game and entertainment system connected to an HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates .

The reference design solves a number of issues related to streaming high definition media over a wireless network:

* Draft 802.11n See 802.11n.  wireless technology, that preferentially operates at 5GHz, avoids interference from neighboring wireless networks and delivers sufficient bandwidth for multiple MPEG-2-encoded HD video streams.

* The devices' automatic self-configuration allows users to simply add high definition media bridges to an existing wireless network or use two or more devices to create a dedicated media network depending on their needs.

* Wireless Intelligent Stream Handling (WISH) automatically and continuously looks for media streams on the wireless link and ensures that they are transmitted at the appropriate priority.

* Wi-Fi Protected Setup Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure establishment of a wireless home network, created by the Wi-Fi Alliance and officially launched on January 8, 2007. [TM] certification ensures simple configuration of a secure wireless network.

"Microsoft Media Center Extenders, such as the Xbox 360, allow users to access media from their PC in exciting new ways. Ubicom's High Definition Media Bridge platform enables a great end-to-end experience far beyond what traditional networking products are capable of," said Glenn Ward, group partner manager for Windows Rally at Microsoft. "Whether they're used for streaming video from a PC, or for connecting to games and services available from Xbox Live, Ubicom's implementation meets a high quality bar for quality of service (QoS), easy setup, and robust networking that's perfect for the exciting applications Microsoft is enabling for the connected home."

"The rapid evolution in the application of home networks creates the need for unique solutions," said Keith Morris, vice president of marketing at Ubicom. "The High Definition Media Bridge solves the problem of how to easily extend a high-performance home network to the 'entertainment island' in the center of the living room."
