SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Announces StreamEngine(R) 5000(TM) Home Router Reference Design with Wireless LAN Intelligent Stream Handling Technology to Create Entertainment Grade Home Networks

Ubicom, Inc., a leading provider of embedded processor and software platforms, unveiled a router reference design for its StreamEngine(R) 5000(TM) communications and media processor (CMP) today at the E3 Show in Los Angeles, California. The production level silicon and software solution is designed to enhance performance of today's faster Wi-Fi home networks, enabling consumers to enjoy next generation applications such as media streaming, gaming and VoIP throughout their home over a wireless connection.

The new StreamEngine 5000 reference design features Wireless LAN Intelligent Stream Handling technology (WISH) developed by Ubicom. WISH enhances the consumer's experience of gaming, HDTV and other media applications over a wireless connection by minimizing the disruptive effects of competing traffic on the network and interference from household items such as microwaves. It automatically detects if audio, video or gaming content is being used on the wireless network and gives these applications priority over less time-sensitive traffic such as email, or file transfers. It then adjusts priorities on the fly to ensure media content is transmitted without jitter or lag. Because it sustains total network throughput in excess of 200Mbps, StreamEngine 5000 with WISH delivers these prioritization benefits on the fastest wireless and in home wiring technologies available today.

The new reference design supports existing 802.11b and g Wi-Fi standards and is designed to optimize the speed and range benefits of 802.11n. It supports the Atheros family of wireless radio solutions, enabling device manufacturers to combine the benefits of StreamEngine 5000's memory-to-memory and multithreaded processor architecture with high performance wireless technology for the optimum consumer Wi-Fi experience. "Ubicom's StreamEngine technology perfectly complements the performance offered by Atheros wireless chipsets to ensure consumers enjoy the full potential of Wi-Fi," said Harpreet Chohan, senior manager of product marketing at Atheros. Ubicom's StreamEngine 5000 CMPs represent a new generation of processors that are specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements for delivering multimedia content to, and within, the digital home. They are ideally suited for the delivery of triple-play services because they allow multiple applications to be independently processed so that they do not interfere with each other. The new reference design further supports the needs of service providers by offering native VoIP support. It also features Ubicom's highly flexible and efficient software reconfigurable interfaces, enabling product designers to easily build different product SKUs, for example to support different interfaces such as HomePlug AV, as well as Wi-Fi.
