. Ferguson (two doctoral candidates at UWM), and Pradeep Rohatgi (a professor in UWM's College of Engineering and Applied Science), were asked by AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

 the investigation into a more concise format to present to U.S. legislators. Schultz and Ferguson volunteered their help for the project. "It's in their interest that this industry grows and survives," Rohatgi said, "so that's how the three of us came together."

During the summer, the two students worked with Rohatgi to analyze the data and draw conclusions in view of their own expertise in science, technology and materials policy. As a result, they compiled two reports on domestic and foreign metalcasting costs. The domestic report can be viewed on p. 18, "Domestic Competitiveness: Investigating U.S. Casting Costs."
