AMERECHEM INC.

AMPACET CORP.

Products 10407 and 10478 contain hindered amine light stabilizers and offer equivalent protection at lower concentrations than traditional absorbers such as benzophenones and nickel-based products. Product 40559 contains 20% of a hindered amine light stabilizer in PP. Product 10561 contains 20% of a polymeric HALS in LDPE. Product 100600 contains 10% of a new HALS performance blend in LDPE.

Spectratech products include concentrates containing a range of different light stabilizers.

BUCKMAN LABORATORIES, INC.

Modified barium metaborate monohydrate, Busan 11-M1, functions as a uv stabilizer. It is believed to perform this function through the mechanism of radical stabilization. Optimum levels are usually in the 8-12 phr range.

BURLINGTON SCIENTIFIC CORP.

Burlsorb UV300 is a highly effective benzophenone uv stabilizer for flexible and rigid PVC, PB, PP, TPEs and various coatings. Inhibits yellowing, embrittlement and deterioration of physical properties caused by uv light.

CABOT CORP., SPECIAL BLACKS DIV.

Black Pearls and Vulcan small-particle carbon black products for use as uv absorbers.

CIBA SPECIALTY CHEMICALS 

UV stabilizers for all polymer applications. In the hindered amine family, Tinuvin 770 reportedly imparts weatherability to polyolefins, polyurethanes, and styrenics beyond levels obtainable with conventional uv stabilizers. Tinuvin 765 liquid hindered amine; Tinuvin 622 FF FDA-approved for food-contact polyolefins; FDA-cleared Chimassorb 944FL for synthetic fibers and PE film; and Chimassorb 119 HAIS for polyolefins. Tinuvin 353 FF, which imparts good thermal stability to fibers, is a new blend of hindered amine stabilizers and benzotriazole uv absorbers for use under extreme uv conditions. Tinuvin 123S solid hindered amine with N-OR functionality and a high resistance to interactions with other ingredients.

New low-volatility, FDA-cleared Tinuvin 1577 FF triazine light stabilizer can extend the use of PET and PC in housing and architectural applications. Its high uv absorption imparts stability to PC and PET in critical coextrusion applications. Tinuvin 234, a low-volatility uv absorber, can be used in clear PET bottles to protect the contents, leading to longer shelf life and improved appearance.

HALS Performance Plus systems offer improved performance in specific polyolefin applications. Tinuvin 783 FDA-cleared HALS for thick-section applications. Tinuvin 111 is said to offer excellent extraction resistance and low pigment interaction and recommended for film and fiber. Tinuvin 791 reportedly offers excellent surface protection in thick sections.

Tinuvin 328, one of several substituted hydroxyphenyl beazotriazoles, is effective in polyesters, PVC, impact PS, PC and acrylics. Tinuvin P, 326, 327 and 571, other substituted benzotriazoles, provide long-term protection against uv light for polyolefins, coatings, urethanes, and other substrates. (See ad p. 357.)

CLARIANT CORP. BUSINESS UNIT ADDITIVES

Broad selection of hindered amine light stabilizers from monomeric, oligomeric, to photereactive include Hostavin N20 and N24 monomeric HALS for polyolefins. Hostavin N24 recommended for acrylics and geotextile applications. Both products are suitable for pigmented thicksection applications.

Hostavin N30 FDA-approved oligomeric HAIS provides enhanced longterm thermo-oxidative stability to polyolefins allowing for a reduction in primary antioxidant needs, which can translate into better overall initial and post color development. In addition, N30 has unique solubility in PB film applications. Greater solubility and compatibility decrease plate-out, migration and blooming during and after film fabrication

Sanduvor PR-31 tertiary hindered amine with uv absorber built into the molecule is a self-photoreactive HALS. Product is synergistic with all classes of uv absorbers for both thin- and thicksection polyolefins. Recommended uses extended to thermoplastic polyesters' and styrenics, PVC and ionomers. Product has solubility for coating-related applications.

Nonhydroxy substituted uv absorbers as well as standard uv absorbers. Sanduvor VSU (oxalanilide family) white, free-flowing polar uva with low volatility and superior absorptivity and sharp cutoff below 350 nm recommended for polyamide, polyesters, PVC, styrenics, PC, polyacetals, PMMA, and several coatingrelated applications including unsaturated polyesters, polyurethane and acrylic resins. Because of product's sharp cutoff below 350 nm, it does not inhibit fluorescent pigment at lower wavelengths. As a nonhydroxy substituted uv absorber, Sanduvor VSU does not interact with catalytic impurities, which cause major discoloration and is inert to radical chemistries that lead to discoloration.

Sanduvor PR 25 (chemically benzylidene malonate ester) nonbydroxy substituted uv absorber with absorptivities above 100 liters has a lambda maxima at 310 nm and sharp cutoff at 350 nm. Polar soluble and clean looking, product specifically designated for applications that require low discoloration and uv protection during early stages of exposure. Recommended for PVC, styrenics, acrylics, PC and polyesters. Inert to radical chemistries and catalytic impurities.

New additive modifier Nylostab S.E.E.D. exploits the so-called lock and key concept known as "molecular recognition." It is white, free-flowing and offered for thick- and thin-section nylon resins. Highly polar and with extremely low volatility, Nylostab is unrestricted in use in all polyamide chemistries including the new transparent nylons.

CROMPTON CORP. POLYMER ADDITIVES

Mark uv absorbers include substituted benzophenones for rigid and flexible PVC, polyolefins, and other resins. Products include Mark 1413 powder and Mark 1535 liquid.

CYTEC INDUSTRIES INC.

Cyasorb uv light stabilizers include UV-9, UV-24, UV-531 and UV-2126 benzophenone absorbers; UV-2337, UV-5411, and UV-5365 benzotriazole absorbers; UV-2908 hindered benzoate stabilizer and UV-1084 nickel phenolate stabilizer.

Two new high-performance uv absorbers: Cyasorb UV-1164 hydroxytriazine with low volatility and good solubility in most polymers provides strong absorbency in both the UV-A and U]V-B regions; and Cyasorb UV-3638 benzoxazinone with very strong absorbency in the UV-A and IJV-B regions is extremely low in volatility and. does not contribute color to the matrix.

Cyasorb UV-3346 HALS is FDA-approved for use in polyolefin food packaging at levels not to exceed 0.3%. Provides a high level of light stability at low concentrations for significant thermal protection at high ambient temperatures. Other HALS include UV-3581, UV-3853 and UV3853S. Cyasorb UV-3529 is a new tertairy HAIS FDA-sanctioned as an indirect food additive. Benefits include low volatility, selective reactivity, minimum color contribution and superior compatibility with other HALS and UVAs. It is beneficial for use in agricultural film, polyolefin fiber, and rotomolding applications.

EVERLIGHT USA, INC.

Benzophenone, benzotriazole, and hindered amine stabilizers (HAIS) for plastics, coatings and cosmetics.

FAIRMOUNT CHEMICAL CO.

Mixxim BB/100 and Mixxim BB/200 high-molecular-weight benzotriazoledimers offer exceptionally low volatility and intense uv energy absorption for use in high temperature plastics such as PC, PET, PBT and nylons. Volatile fumes significantly reduced.

FERRO CORP., POLYMER ADDITIVES

UV-Chek stabilizers include AM105 and AM205 nickel organics that function by a quenching mechanism. AM 104 is a strong uv absorber and hydroperoxide decomposer. Traditional uv absorbers include AM300 and Permyl B-100.

UV-Chek AM340 hydroxybenzoate ester is an effective free-radical terminator-type uv stabilizer. It is particularly effective in combination with uv absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers in pigmented applications.

UV-Chek AM595 acid scavenger for halogen-containing polymers reportedly offers excellent heat and light stabilization. (See ads pp. 327, Cover IV.)

GE SPECIALTY CHEMICALS

Ultranox 626 and Weston 619 solid phosphites used as secondary antioxidants and stabilizers provide processing and color stability, but also act as synergists when combined with uv absorbers, thioesters, and phenolic stabilizers.

GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORP.

Benzophenones, benzotriazoles, and HALS include Lowilite 20, 20S, 22, and 24 hydroxybenzophenones. Lowilite 205 is water soluble. Products used to stabilize polyolefins, PVC, and unsaturated polyesters.

Lowilite 26, 27, 28, and 55 hydroxy phenylbeazotriazole uv absorbers used in polyolefins, PVC, unsaturated polyesters, polyvinyl butyral. Lowilite 76 and 77 monomeric HALS used to stabilize a range of olefin and engineering polymers.

Uvasils 299, 2000, 2006, and 2007 are a new generation of oligomeric HALS based on a siloxane backbone. Products are particularly effective in PP fibers, tapes, and TPOs. Liquid and solid forms available.

Lowilite 62 oligomeric HAIS, designed to minimize color formation during processing and exposure, also shows outstanding performance in carbon black filled systems.

M.A. HANNA COLOR

Specialty additive concentrates in solid or liquid form, with or without colorants, contain uv stabilizers and other additives.

Norbloc 7966 benzotriazole uv stabilizer has a methacrylate ester substituent, which will copolymerize efficiently with various vinyl monomers. Exhibits good solubility in vinyl monomers and common organic solvents. Volatilization and/or exudation during fabrication or end use does not occur. In most cases, problems of compatibility can be readily overcome. Norbloc covalently bonds to the polymer backbone, eliminating release into the environment.

M.A. INDUSTRIES INC., POLYMERS DIV.

UV-249 multicomponent stabilizer system contains the synergistic combination of a HALS, a hindered phenolic antioxidant and a secondary phosphite. Ready-to-use pelletized concentrate generally used in PP fibers, film, and other outdoor molded products where extreme resistance to uv radiation is needed. Typically used at a letdown ratio of 25:1. Tailored formulations available for specific applications.

ZINC CORP. OF AMERICA

French-process zinc oxides such as Kadox-911 and its surface-treated counterpart, Kadox-911C enhance uv stability in HDPE, LDPE, PP, and flexible PVC. Studies reportedly have shown that polyolefins containing zinc oxide and organic synergists (certain antioxidants) exhibit significantly better uv resistance than those with conventional organic uv stabilizers. Company reports that although adequate use life can be obtained with organic stabilizers at 0.3-0.6 phr, at least three times greater protection can be had with Kadox911 or 911C zinc-oxides.
