 USX ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT, RETIREMENT
 PITTSBURGH, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Lewis B. Jones has been


elected vice president and comptroller of USX Corporation (NYSE: X) effective Aug. 1, it was announced today by Robert M. Hernandez, executive vice president-accounting & finance and chief financial officer.
 Rex D. Cooley, who is senior vice president and comptroller of USX, is retiring after more than 33 years of service with USX and previously with Marathon Oil Company (NYSE: MRO).
 Jones, 49, is a native of Bixby, Okla., and a 1966 graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. He also attended the University of Tulsa, the Harvard University program for management development and The Brookings Institution.
 Jones joined Marathon Oil Company in 1966. He served in various audit and accounting posts in Bridgeport, Ill., Lafayette, La., and Findlay, Ohio, prior to being named audit manager in London in 1978. He was appointed controller in London in 1982 and returned to Findlay in 1984 as division manager-production accounting. In 1985 he was appointed finance and administration manager for domestic exploration and production and for worldwide exploration and production in 1986. He was promoted to his most recent post, controller of Marathon Oil Company, in 1988.
 He is a member of the accounting committee of the American Petroleum Institute.
 Cooley, a native of Charleston, Ill., graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1959 and earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Toledo in 1963. He attended the advanced management program at Harvard University.
 He joined Marathon Oil Company in 1959 at the general office in Findlay and served in a series of posts there and in Frankfurt and Burghausen, West Germany.
 In 1968, Cooley returned to the United States and served in a number of positions in the treasury, tax, corporate risk and international accounting organizations. In 1977 he was appointed an assistant controller of Marathon Oil. Later that year he moved to London as manager, finance & administration.
 Returning to Findlay in 1980, Cooley served as manager, auditing, until July 1982 when he was elected a director and vice president, finance & administration of Marathon Petroleum Company. In 1984 he was appointed controller, Marathon Oil Company. In 1986 he was appointed vice president, finance. He was appointed senior vice president-finance & administration, Marathon Oil Company, in 1987, and also elected to the Marathon board of directors. In June 1989, he was elected senior vice president and comptroller of USX Corporation in Pittsburgh.
 Cooley is a former member of the American Petroleum Institute and served on its general committee on finance, accounting and information systems. He is also a former director of the Fifth Third Bank of Northwest Ohio. Cooley has served on the investment review committee of the Toledo (Ohio) Museum of Art. He is a member of the Eastern Illinois University advisory board and serves on the board of directors of the Eastern Illinois University Foundation. He received an honorary doctorate of laws degree from EIU in May 1988. Cooley also serves on the board of directors of Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania.
