Excelentisimo Sr. Presidente:
Re: Protection for Drummond workers on Strike
I am writing on behalf of the 850,000-member USW to express our
concern for the 3,500 striking miners at Drummond's Colombian
operations in the Cesar Department. The USW is very concerned for the
safety of these miners because of recent threats that they have
received from paramilitaries leading up to the time of the strike, as
well as from the Governor of the Cesar Department who has himself
threatened to halt this legal strike by any means necessary. We urge
the Colombian and U.S. governments to take all measures to ensure the
safety and well-being of these striking workers and we pledge our
solidarity to them as they struggle to improve their working lives at
Drummond.
Sincerely yours,
Leo W. Gerard
International President
