USW AND ABG UNDERTAKE RATIFICATION OF CONTRACT
 EXTENSION WITH ALCOA AND REYNOLDS
PITTSBURGH, May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USW) and the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union (ABG) have reached a tentative understanding with Alcoa (NYSE: AA) and Reynolds Metals Company (NYSE: RLM) on a one-year extension of labor agreements that expire May 31, it was announced today.
The agreements cover more than 11,000 employees at 11 Alcoa plants and more than 7,300 employees at 20 Reynolds Metals plants.
The Local Union presidents of the USW and ABG, who represent members at the two companies, met today in Pittsburgh to review terms of the extension agreement. They approved a plant-by-plant membership ratification process that is to be completed on Tuesday, May 5. Local Union presidents of both unions are recommending approval of the extension.
The provisions of the extension agreement are a cash signing bonus for active employees payable immediately upon ratification, an increase for each year of service in the factor used to calculate monthly pension amounts for retirements on June 1, 1992, or later, and an additional cash payment if new agreements are reached by Oct. 2, 1992.
George Becker, USW vice president/administration, and John Murphy, assistant to the president of the ABG, presented the extension proposal at today's joint meeting of the two unions.
In a joint statement, Becker and Ernest LaBaff, president of the ABG, said: "The proposed extension agreement will benefit the members of both unions by providing job and income security, while also setting up a unique procedure for negotiating a long-term agreement by October."
According to Becker, the proposed extension establishes top level joint committees by both unions and the companies to examine issues of lifetime employment security, profit-sharing and health care costs. He said reports by the committee are to be completed by Aug. 31, 1992 in order to facilitate the goal of reaching a new collective bargaining agreement by Oct. 2.
