USS-POSCO RECEIVES QUALITY AWARD WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL TWIST
PITTSBURG, Calif., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A successful marriage of environmental and economic progress has been recognized by the naming of USS-POSCO Industries (UPI) as a Quality Supplier of iron oxide by TDK Ferrite Corporate (TFC), UPI said today.
The iron oxide is produced during the steelmaking process when semi- finished coils of steel are cleaned in a hydrochloric acid solution. Standard equipment requires disposal of the acid solution as a hazardous waste when concentrations of iron oxide reach undesirable levels. However, UPI's $450 million modernization program included the installation of a closed-loop system that recycles the acid, removes the iron, to then make iron oxide. This process eliminates hazardous waste and creates a saleable product.
"This partnership with TFC is valuable to us because it allows us to create a new source of revenue for the company while avoiding the problem of disposing of the iron oxide," said Salvatore S. Sbranti, UPI's vice president of Operations. "I think this demonstrates how our policy of merging economic and environmental interests can really pay off."
Oklahoma-based TFC uses iron oxide to make ceramic magnets used in the manufacture of electric motors, home appliances and automobile parts. TFC purchases nearly 80 percent of the 480 tons of iron oxide UPI produces each month.
UPI is the first TFC supplier to be awarded the Quality Supplier status, which recognizes UPI as a consistent provider of a high-quality product.
"It's a challenge to stay competitive in the market today and since the iron oxide content of our products is 83 percent, high quality and reliability is critical to our success," said Joe Kernan, vice president and co-division manager for TFC. "We believe that UPI has proven it can consistently meet our high standards and the Quality Supplier award is meant to cement the long-term relationship between our companies."
USS-POSCO Industries is a California general partnership, the partners of which are Pitcal Inc., a direct wholly owned subsidiary of USX Corp. and POSCO-California Corp., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., of the Republic of Korea.
