USS-POSCO INDUSTRIES NAMES HAK-BONG KO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
PITTSBURG, Calif., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- USS-POSCO Industries (UPI), California's largest steel producer, has tapped one of its parent company's longtime corporate strategists, Hak-Bong Ko, 51, to serve as executive vice president, UPI said today.
According to UPI President Leonard H. Chuderewicz, Ko will play a key role in helping USS-POSCO build on the marketshare gains, export growth and quality successes the company has experienced since the modernized facility went into operation.
"Our company has made great progress in reaching many of the goals we've set for this facility, but there is much more we need to accomplish," says Chuderewicz. "I'm excited about having Mr. Ko as a member of the UPI team because I believe his expertise and insight will help us keep moving forward toward realizing the full potential of this world-class operation."
Ko, who is familiar with UPI through his service as a member of the company's management committee, brings nearly a quarter-century of steel industry experience to his latest assignment.
Ko joined Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO) as a management trainee in 1969 after earning a law degree and Masters of Public Administration from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. For the past two years, Ko has been senior managing director of POSCO's New Project Division.
Throughout his career, Ko has had an important role in POSCO's corporate strategy and planning. He was named the general manager of POSCO's New York office from 1978, and in 1981, he became general manager of corporate strategy and planning, serving at the company headquarters in Pohang, Korea.
Ko held that post until 1986 when he was promoted to managing director of sales. In addition to his corporate management positions, Ko was named to UPI's Management Committee in 1989.
Ko will be relocating to Contra Costa County, near the USS-POSCO Industries facility.
USS-POSCO Industries is a California general partnership, the partners of which are Pitcal Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of USX Corp. (formerly U.S. Steel) and POSCO-California Corp., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., of the Republic of Korea.
