USS Constellation Decommissioning Work Awarded to United Defense's San Diego Shipyard.

The ship, homeported in San Diego, is one of three non-nuclear-powered carriers in the fleet. SWM is performing the work under a contract awarded by NAVSEA NAVSEA Naval Sea Systems Command

 San Diego at Naval Air Station North Island Naval Air Station North Island (NAS North Island or NASNI) (IATA: NZY, ICAO: KNZY, FAA LID: NZY) is located at the north end of Coronado Island in San Diego Bay, is the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy.  (NASNI NASNI Naval Air Station, North Island (US Navy) ), Coronado, Calif. Completion is scheduled for September 12, 2003.

The basic work package includes preparing the ship for tow to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where she will be mothballed after decommissioning in San Diego in August of this year. SWM is repairing the decks, office spaces, providing temporary services and assisting the ship's force with inactivation inactivation /in·ac·ti·va·tion/ (in-ak?ti-va´shun) the destruction of biological activity, as of a virus, by the action of heat or other agent. . SWM's work items also include installation of propulsion shafting shaft·ing

The "CONNIE" arrived in San Diego on June 2 to a homecoming celebration at the Broadway Pier downtown and in Coronado at NASNI to welcome the ship and her 5,000-plus crew of Sailors and Marines home from her last deployment. The ship served the fleet for 41 years and most recently supported the first air strikes against Baghdad. More than 1,500 combat sorties were launched from her flight deck during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
