 USS/KOBE STEEL COMPANY BOARD APPROVES
 MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MODERNIZATION PROJECT
LORAIN, Ohio, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- USS/KOBE Steel Company announced today that its board of directors has approved a multi-million dollar modernization project involving the company's 10" bar mill.
On Oct. 21, 1991, an engineering study was approved to evaluate improvements to the facility.
Robert K. Fravel, president of USS/KOBE Steel Company, stated: "The engineering study proved that our 10" mill could be modernized to allow us to roll 5mm (.196") through 27mm (1-1/16") product. The new facility is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 1993. This project will allow USS/KOBE to meet existing customer demand for smaller bar sizes, such as the spring round market, and also allow us to expand our market into the rod customer base by offering bar tolerances on rod sizes."
The major components of the modernization include a walking beam furnace, a no twist mill, post sizing block, one of the world's fastest rolling speeds of 120 meters/second, interstand cooling, a Stelmor cooling facility and a modern coil conveyor with state-of-the-art compact banders and handling facilities. Fravel stated: "The added capability of the mill will enable us to provide world class quality in the areas of decarburization, restricted AISI bar tolerances, scale control, uniform mechanical properties, grain size and overall consistency. It will also provide full (2.4 ton) and half coils (1.2 ton)."
The 10" mill project is part of the $500 million modernization that the company has undertaken. "This project will open up opportunities for USS/KOBE to participate in the export market," Fravel concluded. "We will be in position to meet the quality and service demands of both domestic and export customers into the next century."
