USDA.USDA USDA, n.pr See United States Department of Agriculture. has announced a program to increase longleaf pine forests by 250,000 acres throughout nine southern states. The announcement was made by Teresa Lasseter, who administers USDA's Farm Service Agency. Longleaf pine provides numerous environmental and recreational benefits but has declined in the South over the last 100 years. Upping the forestland will provide habitat and nesting cover for wildlife, improve drinking water drinking water supply of water available to animals for drinking supplied via nipples, in troughs, dams, ponds and larger natural water sources; an insufficient supply leads to dehydration; it can be the source of infection, e.g. leptospirosis, salmonellosis, or of poisoning, e.g. supplies, and protect land and waterways from erosion and sedimentation. The initiative will increase forests in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States.
