USC-UCLA MEET STILL SPIRITED RIVALRY TRACK COMPETITORS PUT PERSONAL GLORY ON BACK BURNER.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Dual meets don't matter much in college track and field any more. Athletes now are more focused on individual honors, an NCAA NCAA

title and a possible shot at the Olympics.

The USC-UCLA dual meet is the exception. Running and field events for today's 72nd meeting between the two schools begins at 11 a.m. at USC's Cromwell Field.

``With scholarship limitations and trying to keep athletes healthy, it's very difficult to put together great dual meets,'' USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  coach Ron Allice said. ``This meet is different. One of the greatest dual meets in all of sports, the USC-UCLA meet's rich tradition of competition makes it one of the most special rivalries out there.''

This looks like one of the more even all-around matchups in the rivalry's recent history.

USC has had a difficult time lately in dual meets against UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

. The NCAA limits the amount of scholarships each team can give out. UCLA is a state school and can split more scholarships to give the school depth. It is difficult for USC to attract athletes with partial scholarships because annual tuition exceeds $25,000.

Last year, UCLA defeated USC, 111-52, on the men's side and 93-70 with the women.

The UCLA women have won 12 in a row against USC. The Trojans snapped UCLA's 22-year streak on the men's side in 2001.

This season, the USC men are ranked sixth nationally and UCLA is 19th. On the women's side, UCLA is ranked fifth and USC ninth.

As usual, USC is led by its sprinters. Marvin Anderson Marvin Anderson (born May 12 1982, Trelawny) is a Jamaican sprint athlete.

He finished sixth in the 200m final at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka where he also won a silver medal in the 4 x 100m relay team for Jamaica.
has the second-best time in the 200 meters this season (20.36). Wes Felix, brother of Olympic silver medalist Allyson Felix Allyson Felix (born November 18, 1985 in Los Angeles, California) is a track and field sprint athlete, competing internationally for the United States in the 200 meters. Felix, born and raised in southern California, is also a devout Christian and is the daughter of an ordained , is the defending West Region champ in the 200.

Jon Rankin of UCLA is the top 800- and 1,500-meter runner in the Pac-10.

``It's unfortunate that track and field isn't popular in America because this meet epitomizes what is so special about track and field,'' Rankin said. ``The dual meet is neat because you never know what's going to happen.''

Most dual meets are considered warm ups for the conference, regional and NCAA championships to follow. But this rivalry will not be taking a backseat to anything.

``As far as I'm concerned,'' said UCLA thrower Jake Knight, ``this meet is when the season starts.''
