Rick Majerus spoke briefly Sunday to a USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  official but didn't change his mind about quitting as the Trojans' basketball coach.

A replacement could be hired in the next four weeks.

Majerus called senior associate athletic director Daryl Gross, who said the conversation was cordial and not specific, on the eve On the Eve (Накануне in Russian) is the third novel by famous Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, best known for his short stories and the novel Fathers and Sons.  of Majerus' scheduled meeting today with athletic director Mike Garrett.

``Nothing's different,'' Gross said. ``We're just prepared to make the next move, if necessary.''

Gross said he will hire a new coach before he departs in late January to become Syracuse's athletic director.

``The top five guys on our list are all big-time people,'' Gross said. ``I don't want to leave USC with any unfinished business.''

Pepperdine coach Paul Westphal, Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon and former Chicago Bulls and Iowa State coach Tim Floyd are among the candidates for the job. Texas Tech coach Bob Knight has not been contacted but is interested, according to sources.

Dixon is from North Hollywood, but his Pitt contract requires a buyout clause which could be a factor in his availability. Timing also could be an issue: Fewer coaches might be willing to quit a job in the middle of the season to take over at another school.

Sources said Majerus, 56, quickly became disenchanted dis·en·chant

Majerus discovered, sources said, that football is the No. 1 sport at USC, and football coach Pete Carroll the No. 1 figure, and that basketball would be a distant second.

Majerus is returning to ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  as a college basketball analyst. He signed a five-year deal with the cable network worth $500,000 per year.
