Anyone hoping to steal an inside peek at USC's best quarterback came away disappointed from Saturday's spring football game at Howard Jones Field Howard Jones Field is the practice facility for the USC Trojans football team. It was expanded in the fall of 1998 to include Brian Kennedy Field. In early 1999, Goux's Gate — named after the late popular long-time former assistant coach Marv Goux — was erected at the .

None of the Trojans' three candidates to start next season broke away from the pack during the 79-play scrimmage, so the quarterback race stayed wide open.

Sophomore Quincy Woods completed 2 of 8 passes for 13 yards, although several passes were dropped. Sophomore John Fox completed 6 of 9 passes for 58 yards and freshman Mike Van Raaphorst was 5 for 10 for 62 yards and an interception.

Perhaps the most intriguing quarterback prospect in attendance was Dominguez High School Dominguez High School is a four-year secondary school located in Compton, California. As for the current USC quarterbacks, they were their own worst critics Saturday.

``I couldn't throw a hitch route to save my life,'' Van Raaphorst said. ``I think I fought through it and played pretty well. I feel confident about being in the mix.''

Woods, who seemed to enter spring practice with a slight edge over Fox and Van Raaphorst, gave himself a ``C-'' for his scrimmage performance.

``There's just a lot of things I have to learn,'' Woods said. ``It was a real hard learning experience in spring. I'd say everybody's even.''

As for the running game, junior college transfer Jabari Jackson had 77 yards in 19 carries and one touchdown. Delon Washington had 35 yards in seven carries. Walk-on Jahi Johnson had 39 yards in 11 carries.

The defense was without four starters - Chris Claiborne Christopher Ashone Claiborne (born July 26, 1978 in San Diego) is an American football linebacker who is currently a free agent. Professional Career

Sophomore linebacker David Gibson led the defense with 11 tackles and safety Rashard Cook had a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Robinson singled out Washington, fullback Rodney Sermons and wide receiver Larry Parker for their play Saturday but was not ready to predict how USC would fare next year.

Kicker corralled: USC has added another kicker to its program. Jeff Weichman of Santa Monica has accepted a scholarship and will enroll next spring. He will be a freshman in 1998. Weichman averaged 42 yards per punt and made 14 of 20 field goals last season.
