USC NOTEBOOK : TROJANS HEED ROBINSON'S HALFTIME WAKE-UP CALL.

It was described by some USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  players as an unprecedented halftime outburst by coach John Robinson Several notable individuals have been named John Robinson: Politicians

at the Trojans as he never had before during the intermission of USC's 29-24 victory over Washington State, but the emotional speech seemed to provide the necessary result.

USC (5-3, 3-2), which had rushed for just 33 yards in the first half, gained 115 in the second half.

``He said, `We're going to run and run and run, win or lose,' '' offensive lineman Chris Brymer said. ``We're going to earn some respect out there.

``I think all those guys took the speech at halftime to heart. I took it personally. I felt it was directed toward me.''

Robinson directly challenged his offensive line to take pressure off quarterback Brad Otton by giving the running backs some room to run.

``He got fired up. He challenged them,'' offensive line coach Mike Barry Mike Barry is the assistant offensive line coach for the National Football League Detroit Lions. Coaching career

The offensive line responded by opening huge holes for tailbacks Delon Washington (21 carries, 99 yards) and Shawn Walters (13 carries, 53 yards), and each ended up with season-high rushing marks.

``It's nice to get those guys back up,'' Brymer said. ``They've been through hell lately. I think we took a big step forward.''

Welcome back: After several passive performances reduced his playing time, Washington finally appeared energized for the first time since returning from a three-game suspension at the start of the season.

``I talked to my nephew (Saturday) and he just told me to run the rock hard,'' Washington said. ``We were questioned about what kind of determination we have as (running) backs. We proved we can run the rock. A lot of teams didn't think we could run the ball.''

Season saver? It might not be an understatement to say the Trojans' season was on the line Saturday night. A loss to the Cougars would have sunk USC to 4-4 and more important, given it three conference losses.

USC now is in the race for second place in the Pacific-10, with Washington (5-2, 4-1) coming to the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum.  on Saturday.

``More than anything, our pride was on the line,'' Barry said.

``It's a win we had to have,'' added defensive tackle Matt Keneley said.

There were plenty of anxious moments at the end, particularly as Washington State completed a 48-yard pass on third-and-39 from its own 4-yard line, and eventually reached the USC 11 before turning the ball over.

Did the Trojans ever feel they were going to lose on Washington State's final drive?

``It's a tough situation but really there's no time to think,'' Keneley said. ``I don't care

Hall said he did not signal a fair catch and Soward said he heard Hall call him forward.

``He was pointing back to me,'' Soward said. ``I just ran up and caught the ball and saw the opening and ran.''
