USC NOTEBOOK: TROJANS LOST OUT ON QB.

Washington quarterback Isaiah Stanback could easily be playing for USC but his interest in the Trojans waned after they preferred he play a different position.

Stanback attended USC's summer camp during high school and expressed an interest in committing, but was told he would probably play another position, such as wide receiver, cornerback or safety.

``He's a fantastic athlete and we were honest with him about where we thought he would play,'' USC coach Pete Carroll said.

Stanback has passed for 951 yards and rushed for 306 in leading the Huskies to a 4-1 start.

Jarrett suits up: Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett (sprained shoulder) said he will dress for the game but is only 70percent healed and does not want to play unless necessary.

``If I have to, I will,'' Jarrett said. ``If they need me, I will but if not, I won't. It's up in the air.''

Jarrett sounded like he preferred to wait another week, but then added, ``I might surprise you guys.''

Rachal can play: Offensive guard Chilo Rachal (sprained ankle) said he felt like he could start after participating in some of Thursday's practice, but offensive line coach Pat Ruel said he is inclined to go with Alatini Malu.Meanwhile, another worry is offensive guard Jeff Byers, who got another MRI because his recovery from back surgery is not going as planned.

Ellis starts: Nose guard Sedrick Ellis is expected to start after making it through practice this week since returning from knee surgery. There was a flip-flop on the defensive line this week, with Kyle Moore moving over to the end spot manned by Lawrence Jackson. Moore will likely back up Jackson after getting just eight plays against Washington State.

No problem: Tailback C.J.Gable said he will return kickoffs despite being bothered by a sore groin. Cary Harris said he would focus on defense and not return kicks. Kicker Troy Van Blarcom is also OK after bruising his thigh.

Student tickets: About 500 students purchased tickets for Saturday's game that were made available when Washington returned some of its portion. That's in addition to the increased allotment of 9,200 seats that are going to made available to students.
