Bob Hooks was a defensive end at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  the last time the Trojans and California played at the Coliseum and were both ranked in the top 10.

Today, a crowd of more than 92,000 is expected, which will be a little short of the 94,677 that Hooks played before in 1952, when the seventh- ranked Trojans defeated the No. 4-ranked Bears 10-0.

``I've still got the picture cutouts of that game,'' Hooks said. ``They were a big rival. No question about that.''

What Hooks remembers most is that USC also beat Cal in 1951, when the Bears were the No. 1 team in the nation.

``They hadn't lost for three or four years, they went to the Rose Bowl every year,'' Hooks said. ``That was huge. We weren't supposed to win but Frank Gifford Francis Newton Gifford (born August 16 1930 in Santa Monica, California) is a former American football player and one of the better-known American sports commentators in the latter part of the 20th century who made the transition from an athlete to broadcasting.  had a wonderful game.''

Hooks, 74, will watch today's game on TV.

``These two teams are better offensively,'' he said. ``But in 11 games, we gave up 47 points. Nobody scored more than one touchdown on us.''

The 1952 Trojans recorded five shutouts, went 10-1 and won the Rose Bowl.

``In 1951, we knocked the socks off (Cal),'' Hooks said. ``In 1952, we kept going until we got to the Rose Bowl.''

--Schweiger doubtful: It will be interesting to see if freshman defensive end Jeff Schweiger, who has a bone bruise in his knee, plays today. Doctors and trainers advised Schweiger to sit out the game but USC coach Pete Carroll Peter C. Carroll (born September 15, 1951, in San Francisco, California) is the current head coach of the University of Southern California Trojans football team, having held that position since 2001.  wants him to try to play.
