USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: VIRUS AILS WASHINGTON.Byline: MATTHEW KREDELL Staff Writer Chauncey Washington Chauncey Washington (born April 29, 1985) is a college football running back attending the University of Southern California (USC). High school career Washington had a heralded career as an athlete at South Torrance High School. missed USC football USC football refers to either of two NCAA Division I-A college football programs:
``He was sick as a dog,'' coach Pete Carroll said. Washington came to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. in the morning but could barely stand, according to Carroll, and was sent home. His absence causes concern with Monday's Rose Bowl against Michigan quickly appraoching. Washington started at running back for the Trojans when healthy. He was hampered much of the season by a torn medial collateral ligament The medial collateral ligament or MCL (or tibial collateral ligament) is one of the four major ligaments of the knee. Familiar foes: USC running back C.J. Gable used to block for reserve Michigan cornerback Chris Richards in his early years of Pop Warner football. Gable played fullback on the Pacoima Wildcats for the older Richards, who was one of the best youth runners in the area at the time. Richards went on to play at corner and receiver in high school at Monroe of NorthHills. The sophomore plays mostly special teams for the Wolverines. ``Everybody knew about him,'' Gable said. ``He had amazing speed. You just toss him the ball and he'd take off. To us, he was so fast. But, I think later by high school we had caught up to him.'' Gable always wanted to play running back but never really got the opportunity until he was at Sylmar High. In his older years of Pop Warner, he was the backup to USC redshirt freshman receiver Jamere Holland (Taft High). Injury updates: Defensive lineman Brian Cushing and linebacker Dallas Sartz returned to practice Friday. Cushing, who was out with a knee injury, handled a full load and did a little extra work with the service team. ``I felt good coming back,'' Cushing said. ``I didn't really feel a drop off or tired or anything.'' Cushing wore a brace on his left knee that he said he will continue wearing in practice this week but plans to have off for Monday's game. Sartz (hip flexor flexor /flex·or/ (flek´ser) 1. causing flexion. 2. a muscle that flexes a joint. flexor retina´culum see entries under retinaculum. ) was more limited in practice and took portions off. Carroll said that he thought Sartz would play but that Clay Matthews (Agoura High) was ready to start in his place if needed. Tough matchup: Sam Baker had an All-America season somewhat soiled during the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX game, when Bruce Davis and the Bruins defensive line put constant pressure on USC quarterback John David Booty John David Booty (born January 3, 1985, in Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.) is the starting quarterback of the University of Southern California (USC) football team. He is called "John David", and sometimes referred to as J.D., because his father's name is John. . A more difficult assignment lies ahead in Michigan defensive end LaMarr Woodley, the Lombardi Award winner who has 11 sacks. ``He's a worker, a high-motor guy,'' Baker said. ``I've played against some good guys but his motor is better than their's.'' matthew.kredell@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 |
