USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: VAN BLARCOM STILL AILING.

Byline: MATTHEW KREDELL Staff Writer

Troy Van Blarcom clearly isn't the same kicker that boomed kickoffs through the end zone earlier in the season.

His first kickoff last week against Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  came down at the 12-yard line, and he failed to record a touchback for the first time all year.

came out negative, but Van Blarcom is afraid he might need surgery in the offseason.

``I'm having a hard time kicking the ball to my potential lately,'' Van Blarcom said. ``I can feel the hip sometimes but I try to keep it out of my head. I was just getting under the ball and not hitting it fat like I normally do.''

Van Blarcom, whose only assignment on the Trojans is to handle kickoffs, began the season by nailing eight of nine for touchbacks against Arkansas. Through five games, he had 24 touchbacks in 31 attempts.

Over the next three games, he kicked just four of 18 into the end zone as his hip began affecting him.

After rebounding a bit against Oregon and Cal, VanBlarcom looked terrible against the Irish.

Emmanuel Moody also will play at tailback after finishing his third practice of the week without any setbacks on his injured ankle.
