is having and (safety) Darnell Bing had,'' Cushing said. ``Just repairing some muscles.''

Cushing said he wears a harness during practices and games to keep the shoulder tight, but doesn't think the surgery will prevent him from participating in spring practice.

He's needed for the rest of this season because starting linebacker Thomas Williams is nursing a groin injury.

``Hopefully, I can fill the void,'' Cushing said. ``I think I can play more and more as the season goes on.''

Sartz, who is redshirting, is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery today at USC University Hospital.

--Wyatt upset: Cornerback Justin Wyatt never allowed a touchdown pass in three years, but he's surrendered three in the past three games.

``It is frustrating,'' Wyatt said. ``I don't take losing well. It hurts to get that streak broken now. It's not a rut though, you just have to keep playing.''

Wyatt said receivers are bumping him during games but referees are not calling offensive interference.

``It's something the refs won't call,'' he said. ``If you watch the film, the ref reached for the flag but didn't throw. The receiver hit me in the face. I don't want to complain, I just lost that battle.''

--Mini-slump: The coaching staff is beginning to get on offensive tackle Winston Justice, who committed a holding penalty and wasn't on the field for an extra point that resulted in a delay-of-game penalty against Washington.

``He's struggling technique-wise,'' offensive line Pat Ruel said. ``He's not playing as consistently as he can. He wasn't as physical as we would like.''

--Injury report: Cornerback John Walker will not play this week and could be out longer with a high-ankle sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. . He will be replaced by sophomore Josh Pinkard, a converted safety.

Tailback LenDale White (bruised thigh) did not practice but is expected to return today. Linebacker Keith Rivers (hamstring) and cornerback William Buchanon (hip flexor flexor /flex·or/ (flek´ser)
