Lost amid the hype about USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  tailback Reggie Bush Reginald "Reggie" Bush, birth name: Reginald Alfred Bush II (born March 2, 1985 in San Diego, California), nicknamed 'The Human Highlight Reel' and 'The President', alluding to President Bush, is an American football player who plays for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL.  is probably the most impressive school record he is on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of setting this season.

Bush averages 8.9 yards per carry and the highest average on the top 25 USC season-rushing leaders is 6.8, set by Orv Mohler in 1930. USC's other tailback, LenDale White LenDale Anthony White (born December 20, 1984) is an American football running back who plays for the Tennessee Titans. He played for Norm Chow at USC, who is now the Titans' offensive coordinator. His head coach in Tennessee, Jeff Fisher, also played for the USC Trojans. , is also challenging the mark, averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

``I never really thought about it because I've never been big on stats but the fact it is a record is cool,'' Bush said.

For some perspective on Bush's achievement, the highest per-carry average for a USC player gaining more than 1,000 yards in a season was Charles White's 6.2 average in 1979.

``Among all the historic 1,000-yard single season rushing performances by USC backs, Charles White Charles or Charlie White may refer to:
  • Charlie White (artist) (born 1972), U.S. artist
  • Charles White (author) (born 1976), U.S. author of "The Loyalist's Son, Standards Left Ragged"
  • Charlie White (figure skater) (born 1987), U.S. ice dancer.
had set the standard,'' said USC football historian Mike Glenn. ``Bush's 8.9 average breaks that record by a factor of about 42 percent. Whether it's Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Ricky Bell, White, Marcus Allen and all the rest, Bush is simply in another league.''

Bush's accomplishments are coming in spite of his few carries. He gained 294 yards against Fresno State and 260 against UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
, which are two of the top six rushing performances at USC since 1926.

But he did it on just 23 and 24 carries, respectively. The others four performances in the top six had a minimum of 40 carries.

``Obviously, it all comes from preparation, not just during the season but before the season,'' Bush said. ``And a lot of credit goes to the offensive line.''

--Add history: Bush broke a 76-year-old record for yards rushing against UCLA. The previous mark was set by Russ Saunders, who had 234 yards in 14 carries in the inaugural game on Sept. 28, 1929.

Saunders is better known today as the model for the head, chest and shoulders of the Tommy Trojan statue on the USC campus.

--Out of town: USC coach Pete Carroll was in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday visiting tailback Michael Goodson, who is ranked the eighth-best tailback in the country by Rivals.com.

--More All-Americans: Bush, wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett and offensive guard Taitusi Lutui were named All-Americans by Sports Illustrated on Tuesday. Bush, Jarrett, Lutui and quarterback Matt Leinart depart for Orlando, Fla., today for a college football awards show that also honors the Coaches' All-American team.
