USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: BOOTY'S STATUS STILL DOUBTFUL.

 Saturday about the prospect of quarterback John David Booty John David Booty (born January 3, 1985, in Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.) is the starting quarterback of the University of Southern California (USC) football team. He is called "John David", and sometimes referred to as J.D., because his father's name is John.  playing against Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  this week with a broken finger.

"He's a got a broken finger, he's not going to be healthy," USC coach Pete Carroll Peter C. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said it might be "difficult" for Booty to return. Booty's finger looked swollen after the game, but he said he wanted to try and throw at Tuesday's practice.

"That's my goal right now. Tuesday I'd like to really test it out," Booty said. "It does (feel better)."

Carroll said backup Mark Sanchez would be the starter heading into practice.

Sarkisian said the goal with Sanchez was to keep it simple, although he threw two interceptions Saturday.

"We tried to keep it short or deep to avoid mid-range throws where you get in trouble," Sarkisian said.

On a mission: Freshman tailback Joe McKnight said Saturday's game was a chance to show people what he's capable of doing.

"Since I got here I've been trying to prove what I can do, especially to the seniors," McKnight said.

There's been some playful banter with teammates, and earlier in the week linebacker Brian Cushing told McKnight, "You're one step from the (scout) team."

Sideline visitors: Former USC wide receiver R. Jay Soward Rodney (R.) Jay Soward (born January 16, 1978 in Rialto, California) is a football player who most recently played for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts as a wide receiver. College career
He burst onto the college football scene with a 4-TD game vs.
 attended Saturday's game with a group of players from Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino, where Soward is an assistant coach.

Former Duke and Chicago Bulls point guard Jason Williams was a guest on the Arizona sideline.

Mater Dei High of Santa Ana quarterback Matt Barkley attended his second straight USC home game.

Injury report: USC lost two starters on the offensive line, including three-time All-American Sam Baker, who strained his hamstring. Offensive guard Zack Heberer left the game with a bruised shoulder but offensive line coach Pat Ruel said it was believed Heberer tore something. He will undergo an MRI 1. Linebacker Rey Maualuga suffered a hip pointer and said he "possibly" could miss the Notre Dame game. Safety Kevin Ellison also suffered a possible broken nose.

Opposing view: Arizona coach Mike Stoops was asked if Stanford's upset of USC gave his team confidence.

"Kids see what's out there, they're smart," Stoops said. "Them not having Booty ... and we played them 13-3 in the fourth quarter last time. You just better be ready to play in this league or you'll get run over."
