USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  quarterback John David Booty John David Booty (born January 3, 1985, in Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.) is the starting quarterback of the University of Southern California (USC) football team. He is called "John David", and sometimes referred to as J.D., because his father's name is John.  could miss the rest of spring practice and possibly longer after suffering back spasms that could also include a disk problem.

``Surgery may be down the road,'' USC coach Pete Carroll Peter C. Carroll (born September 15, 1951, in San Francisco, California) is the current head coach of the University of Southern California Trojans football team, having held that position since 2001.  said. ``It's not at all the time to do that.''

USC is taking a wait-and-see attitude with Booty's back and will wait two weeks to see how he responds. If things don't improve, surgery would be an option and he would probably be sidelined until July.

Booty suffered the injury during Tuesday's practice and his back locked up Wednesday. He did not attend Thursday's practice.

``When your back locks up, that's something you deal with carefully,'' offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  Lane Kiffin Lane Kiffin (born May 9, 1975) is the head coach of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). Carroll said the injury would not affect his decision-making process on whether Booty or freshman Mark Sanchez starts at quarterback.

``I don't have make any decisions because when we started out, John David was way ahead of Mark,'' Carroll said. ``It couldn't happen at a better time.''

Sanchez ran 100 plays during Thursday's practice and will get more work than imagined during spring drills.

``That was awesome,'' Sanchez said of his extended work. ``It was different than Day 1 with all those reps I'm trying to catch up where (Booty) is.''

This is the third setback for Booty since he enrolled at USC. He broke his left wrist during the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Without Booty, former walk-on Mike MacDonald is the backup to Sanchez. Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks quarterback Garrett Green, who attended Thursday's practice, will arrive in the fall.

--Also: Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett missed practice because of class. Carroll praised the development of sophomore cornerbacks Cary Harris (Notre Dame) and Kevin Thomas (Rio Mesa of Oxnard).

Cornerback Terrell Thomas, who tore knee ligaments in the second game against Arkansas, is performing some drills and ahead of schedule on his recovery. Safety Kevin Ellison, who tore knee ligaments against Arizona State, is also ahead of schedule.
