USC BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: HACKETT STILL ON FLOYD'S GOOD SIDE.

Byline: MATTHEW KREDELL Staff Writer

Daniel Hackett sat and watched USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  basketball practice from a sideline seat Wednesday as punishment for missing a study hall.

Coach Tim Floyd Tim Floyd (born February 25, 1954) is the current head coach of the University of Southern California men's college basketball team. Floyd is also a former head coach of several teams in both the NCAA and the NBA.  said that would be the extent of the discipline.

``If he makes class (today), he'll play,'' Floyd said of tonight's game against Oregon State.

The freshman point guard has mostly come off the bench since the return of Gabe Pruitt Gabriel Michael Pruitt (born on April 19, 1986 in Los Angeles, California) is an African American basketball player with the Boston Celtics. Biography

On April 27 Pruitt announced that he registered for the 2007 NBA Draft.
from academic ineligibility Dec. 22. And with Pruitt recovering from a stomach virus, Hackett may be needed for more minutes against the Beavers.

Hackett seems to be earning Floyd's trust in late-game situations because of his defense and fearlessness.

``He's certainly one of the more intense guys and he brings that intensity to his defense,'' Floyd said.

Add Pruitt: After missing practice Tuesday, Pruitt returned Wednesday and battled through most of the drills not feeling his best.

``I'm just real weak right now, like my body's just aching -- my stomach and lower back,'' Pruitt said. ``... I should be (healthy) enough to play and contribute (tonight).''

Pruitt said he spent four hours at the doctor Tuesday and needed to take two bags of fluids intravenously. The doctor indicated he probably had a virus.

Numbers down: In his first 17 games, freshman forward Taj Gibson Taj Gibson is an African American basketball power forward. College career

scored in double figures 15 times with eightdouble-doubles.

In the past five games, he has had nine points three times and 11 twice. He hasn't reached 10rebounds in the past sixgames.

``I think a lot of it is scouting, a lot of it double-teams,'' Gibson said.

Floyd said the size and length of teams USC has played recently has had an effect. Against Cal, the 6-foot-9 Gibson gave up an inch to Ryan Anderson Ryan Anderson may refer to:

  • Ryan G. Anderson (born 1978), U.S. National Guard specialist convicted of treason in 2004
  • Ryan Anderson (basketball), California Golden Bear freshman basketball player
. At Stanford, he had at least five shots blocked by 7-foot twins Brook and Robin Lopez.

Free-throw woes also have hurt Gibson's point total. Before making all three against Cal, he converted just 4 of 15 over the previous four games. He has been spending time "Spending Time" is the first single released by Christian artist Stellar Kart.

after practice to correct that problem.

``If he just makes his free throws, he'd be scoring four more points a game,'' Floyd said.
