USB On-The-Go passes initial interoperability tests. (Top Technology Showcase).

(hardware, standard) Universal Serial Bus - (USB) An external peripheral interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals over an inexpensive cable using biserial transmission.

), reached an important milestone in the spring when prototype devices were able to communicate without a central host PC to negotiate data.

At the USB-Implementers Forum Compliance Workshop in May, USB OTG integrators met to perform initial testing of OTG Dual-Role devices against USB OTG electrical and protocol compliance programs. Specifically, Host Negotiation (HNP) and Session Request (SRP SRP - A data link layer protocol. ) Protocols were demonstrated and tested for compliance using OTG Dual-Role devices from several different vendors. , Cypress, Philips, and TransDimension). Each sequence was completed successfully.

The OTG specification is a supplement to USB 2.0 and provides for limited host capability within non-PC devices such as MP3 players, digital cameras, PDAs, and mobile phones. When the final specification is announced, compliant "dual-role" OTG devices should be able to exchange data across a standard USB cable--with a mini-connector at both ends--without an attached computer.

According to Cypress officials who attended the tests, a second OTG test was created around the USB Mass Storage Class to enable file transfers between devices. Three different manufacturers were able to connect their OTG Dual-Role devices together and perform a data transfer. The first device transferred an audio file to the second device, which then transferred that file to the final device in the chain; the final device played the audio file through USB speakers. In each case, the dual-role devices were able to successfully act as both the host and as the peripheral.

The OTG Working Group expects to expand the scope of its compliance program at the next USB plugfest, scheduled for August. See the March issue of CTR at www.wwpi.com for a full discussion of USB OTG.
