USAIR TO TRANSFER CHARLOTTE-LONDON ROUTE AUTHORITY TO NASHVILLE FOR $5 MILLION (.)

ARLINGTON, Va., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir today announced that the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority will pay USAir $5 million in connection with the transfer of USAir's Charlotte-London route authority. The agreement is contingent upon the transfer of the U.S. gateway from Charlotte to Nashville.
Daily service between Charlotte and London will be continued by British Airways under terms of a marketing alliance between the two airlines in which USAir agreed to divest its authority to operate between Charlotte, Baltimore and Philadelphia and London's Gatwick Airport.
USAir's plan to sell the three London authorities was made public in July 1992 with the initial announcement of plans for British Airways to invest in USAir and for the two airlines to begin formation of a global alliance. This intention has been publicly repeated many times since and USAir advised the CEOs of all major airlines and other parties that the routes were available for sale.
United will purchase USAir's Philadelphia-London Gatwick authority for $14.5 million, conditional upon receiving the approvals of the U.S. and British governments to transfer the authority to Chicago and operate the flights to London Heathrow Airport.
Northwest will buy USAir's Baltimore-London authority for $5 million and transfer it to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
