USAIR PILOTS REACTION TO COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENT

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by the USAir pilots Master Executive Council, a part of the Air Line Pilots Association, in response to the company's announcement:
The USAir pilots of the Air Line Pilots Association share the company's disappointment with their projection of continuing losses through 1993. Obviously, we wish our company were in a position to expand operations in order to increase, or at least maintain, the present work force.
We see today's announcement by USAir as a continuation of the company's cost reduction plan that was started more than three years ago. In the current pilot contract, USAir pilots provided significant long-term productivity improvements which are reducing costs. As a result, there will be no pilot reductions.
We share the pain of the employees who will lose their jobs as a result of the cutbacks announced by the company. We hope that the duration of these layoffs will be briefer than that experienced by 303 of our pilots. Some of them have been furloughed for over three years.
