US$43 Million Contract for Bouygues Offshore in Nigeria.

), has been awarded a contract with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, for the laying of pipelines in the Niger Delta The Niger Delta, the delta of the Niger River in Nigeria, is a densely populated region sometimes called the Oil Rivers because it was once a major producer of palm oil. .

The US$43 million contract calls for engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning of the pipelines in the swamp area between Ekulama Field and Soku Gas Plant (Southwest of Port Harcourt Port Harcourt (här`kərt, –kôrt), city (1991 est. pop. 362,000), SE Nigeria, a deepwater port on the Bonny River in the Niger delta. ).

The gas will be transported from the Ekulama Field to the Soku Gas Plant through steel pipelines coated with concrete (diameters: 18 inch, 12 inch and 6 inch).

The delivery date is scheduled for July 2000.

Commenting on this contract, Herve Le Bouc, Chief Executive Officer of Bouygues Offshore, stated: "The laying of large diameter pipelines in swamp areas is one of Bouygues Offshore's specialties. It involves the design and implementation of specialized equipment which is able to operate in shallow waters or swamp areas where low draft is a critical component."
