UPSTART SCHOOL BOASTS TALENTED FRESHMEN.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON

Watch out, girls' high school basketball teams. Here comes Golden Valley High.

The first-year team is composed only of freshmen - the lone sophomore, Erica Gudino, has suffered a season-ending knee injury - but the girls are playing some serious basketball.

Golden Valley is 11-1, including several victories over junior-varsity opponents, and the Grizzlies The name Grizzlies may refer to:

figure to have a good chance to win more than 20 games in a freelance schedule.

``The way we're playing now, we have a good chance to run the table,'' coach Troy Best said.

Golden Valley is winning by an average of 20 points and has allowed just 22 points per game. The team has won three tournaments and owns two victories over Hart's freshman team. Golden Valley's only loss was to Valencia's JV team.

Among the pivotal players is Meredith Mathis. She's averaging 15 points a game, and she connected on five 3-pointers during a 21-point, 15-rebound performance against Hart.

``She's playing incredibly right now,'' said Best, a former head coach for Canyon's varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Other key contributors are Amber Henderson and Tera McKelvey.

Things should get interesting next season. Golden Valley will join the Foothill League as a varsity team, although most of its players will be freshmen and sophomores.

``There just aren't many sophomores on campus right now, so the only way we're going to have juniors is if they transfer in,'' Best said.

The Foothill League will have seven girls' basketball teams next season. West Texas A&M is among the universities that have expressed interest, although no official offers have surfaced.

``I definitely plan to continue playing football,'' Fuselier said. ``I'm not on a lot of recruiting lists, so I just have to (promote) myself. I guess it just all depends, but I plan to work hard.''

--Saugus High football standout Kody Kurowski, who spent the last few weeks of the season in a cast after breaking his leg, has switched to to a walking cast.

The tight end/defensive lineman hopes the injury doesn't turn off college recruiters.
