UPS FIRMS UP OPTIONS FOR 13 ROLLS-ROYCE TAY 651 ENGINES

RESTON, Va., Dec. 15, 1992 /PRNewswire/ -- United Parcel Service has firmed up options for 13 Rolls-Royce Tay 651 engines to re-engine an additional four 727-100 Quiet Freighters.
The engines, valued at approximately $30 million, include one spare and are the first options for up to 40 additional aircraft UPS has exercised.
"Re-engining these additional airplanes is another step in UPS's commitment to fly the quietest aircraft possible," said Pat Donahoe, UPS vice president, aircraft maintenance and engineering. "We are very pleased with the noise margins that have been demonstrated during flight certification.
"The ease with which the Tay engines have been integrated into the B727 airframe confirms our original decision that re-engining rather than hush-kitting is both the environmental and economical solution to the noise rules," he said.
"The UPS decision comes toward the end of the very smooth flight certification program and is a reflection of the overall success of the Tay re-engining program," said Ken Greenall, project director, Tay.
The original contract, signed in July 1990, called for Rolls- Royce to provide Tay 651s to re-engine 40 firm 727-100s plus 40 options.
Rolls-Royce is scheduled to deliver the additional engines between October 1994 and August 1995.
The re-engined 727-100QF powered by three 15,100-pounds-of-thrust Tay 651s first flew in April and received Federal Aviation Administration certification last month.
The aircraft entered service last week.
