UPS DAILY AIR VOLUME TOPS 1 MILLION

 ATLANTA, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Double-digit growth in United Parcel Service (UPS) air express business pushed the company's average daily air volume over 1 million packages and documents per day for the third quarter of 1993. This represents the first quarter in the company's history in which average daily air volume has exceeded 1 million pieces.
 For the 13-week period ended Oct. 2, average daily air volume was 1,040,055, an increase of 29.2 percent over the same period last year. The company's air volume includes both domestic and international services.
 Volume growth was led by UPS's international air services -- Worldwide Express and Worldwide Expedited -- up a combined 33.3 percent for the quarter.
 UPS expects air volume to remain above the million-per-day level and continue to grow. Throughout 1993, UPS air volume has shown consistent growth rates across all services in excess of 20 percent over 1992.
 UPS attributes the strong growth to several factors:
 -- Outstanding performance against its 10:30 a.m. guaranteed service commitment since its introduction in 1990;
 -- Introduction of cellular, on-line package tracking last February;
 -- Rapid deployment of UPS Letter Centers (drop boxes);
 -- Wider availability and use of customer shipping systems (UPS MaxiShip and UPS MaxiTrac);
 -- Growth of UPS On Call Air (on-demand pickup);
 -- Introduction of the UPS 2nd Day Air Letter.
 UPS entered the two-day air delivery business in 1953 and began its one-day air service in 1982. In 1988, the company launched its own airline, the fastest start-up of a new airline in the history of the Federal Aviation Administration.
 Today, UPS operates one of the 10 largest airlines in the United States, with 198 large cargo jets owned or on order, and another 260 leased aircraft. UPS flies nearly 1,500 flight segments per day, into 558 airports.
