UPON FURTHER REVIEW: NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS LATEST VICTORY PROVES CANYON SIMPLY AREA'S BEST TEAM.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, on behalf of the Canyon High football team in its ongoing case for respect from the people of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita.  ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is this any way to treat the finest team in all of the Foothill League, and perhaps all of the region and maybe even the entire Southern Section?

We think not.

Cowboys these Canyon players might be, but we refer you to the final result of Thursday's game against Valencia as proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the football team at Canyon is indeed the best around, and not just a bunch of rootin', tootin' rodeo cowboys. Canyon's 52-45 victory over Valencia, in which Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ... , the the region's roughest, toughest quarterback, blazed a trail through the Vikings' defense with 336 yards passing and five touchdowns, is sufficient evidence the Cowboys (6-0, 1-0) finally can proclaim pro·claim

their innocence of being a mediocre program.

And though they never would be so bold as to say it, we certainly will: Canyon is the region's best football team.

Period.

Did we mention the Cowboys will play Hart of Newhall on Thursday in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports Net 2? The same Hart team that has not lost a Foothill League game in 11 years, a span that covers 58 games?

The same Hart team that was to be the best until Harry Welch rode back into town to take over the Canyon program after lying low in retirement for seven years?

Yes, that Hart. And yes, that Welch.

Welch had coached Canyon to 46 consecutive victories and three section titles in a row from 1983-1993, but without him it went 38-46.

It's taken nearly three seasons, but it's clear after Thursday's victory the Cowboys are all the way back.

They might not say it, but they sure play like it.

``Well, I'm not sure we made any sort of a statement (Thursday night) because there is still a lot of football to be played,'' said Longshore long·shore

, who will play at California next year. ``It just feels good to be playing in games like this. It's taken a little while, but we're getting closer and closer.''

If the Cowboys were any closer they'd be hanging a championship banner right now. With Longshore, a 6-foot-4, 230-pounder who can flick off defenders with one arm and sling sling (sling) a bandage or suspensory for supporting a part.

Throw in hard-hitting middle linebacker Andrew Shantz leading the defense, and there is little doubt the Cowboys can end Hart's streak next week.

``We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves because it's still a one- game-at-a-time type of thing for us,'' Shantz said. ``But we're definitely feeling pretty good about things. We just have to keep it rolling now.''

When Welch took over again in 2001, he put a three-year timetable on the Cowboys' return to prominence. He caught a huge break when he spotted Longshore playing basketball and saw a future Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) is a college athletic conference which operates in the western United States.
