UPON FURTHER REVIEW: ENOUGH TALENT TO GO AROUND.

Byline: VINCENT VINCENT Vital Information Necessary Centralized (movie, The Black Hole)  BONSIGNORE

Taft High of Woodland Hills wide receiver Jamere Holland lined up wide left early in the second quarter against Birmingham of Lake Balboa on Friday night and got in position.

Locked and loaded, Holland stared straight ahead at Patriots cornerback De Jaune Adams, practically daring him to try and stop him.

Frozen, the two players just stood there near the Taft 20-yard line, staring at each other.

For a good 10 seconds or so.

A referee on the sideline sideline

 finally broke the tension.

``Hey 18,'' the referee said, getting Holland's attention. ``Relax, kid.''

Holland just looked at the referee.

``What?'' Holland said, confused.

``TV timeout,'' the referee said, explaining the delay. ``Relax.''

Holland smiled. Then he gestured to Adams.

``What's up, man?''

Adams shrugged his shoulders, not about to get into it with the speedy Holland. On Taft's previous possession, Holland had gone airborne between two Birmingham defenders to snatch snatch

a 28-yard touchdown pass from Josh Portis. Now, Adams seemed reluctant to be reminded about it.

Holland laughed, then got back in position when play resumed. At the snap of the ball, he blasted past Adams as if shot out of a cannon. In the blink of an eye, he was at the 50-yard line, chasing down a long spiral from Portis. A few seconds later, he was in the end zone, celebrating a 79-yard touchdown, his second score in as many plays.

As it turns out, only television was able to slow Holland down.

For both teams.

It's no news flash that Taft and Birmingham don't like each other - only a few miles separate the two West Valley League foes - but the divide between feelings for one another is as wide as the Pacific Ocean.

That aside, they do share one common trait: Tremendous athletes. And when you remove all the side antics between the two rivals - the trash talking trash talk

between fans, the distaste and distrust between coaches and players - and just watch them play football, it can be a thing of beauty.

Holland, a junior, is a spectacular performer with speed to burn. As a sophomore last year, he was the top 100-yard sprinter. In the state. Holland, whose best time was 10.5 seconds, was virtually a shoo-in to win the state crown, but a false start in the City Final - at Birmingham High, no less - disqualified dis·qual·i·fy

If Friday's speed show was any indication, he'll challenge again for the title in the spring.

But Holland was merely one of many athletes who mesmerized Friday.

Portis, Taft's 6-foot-5 quarterback, is regarded as the nation's top athlete at his position. Portis, who will play college ball at Utah, patterns his game after Atlanta Falcons

Portis, a difference maker, made four critical plays late in the game. With the score tied 14-14, he darted past the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

He also raced down the sideline on a 41-yard gain with just more than a minute to play ,then caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Thyrell Lewis to put Taft ahead 28-21 with 46 seconds left in the game.

But the real pleasure Friday was watching the action between wide receivers and defensive backs as they waged a game-long battle of highlight plays. Between the speed and the vicious hits, the action never stopped.

Adams more than held his own, diving over Holland on one play to intercept a Portis pass, then alertly grabbing a tipped pass out of the sky for another interception in the fourth quarter.

Holland, who also plays cornerback, helped slow down electric Birmingham receivers Cary Anderson and Kenny Davis, matching the speedy duo step for step along with fellow defensive backs Malcolm Smith Malcolm Smith may refer to:

Anderson and Davis had their moments, too. Anderson leaped high between three Taft defenders to come down with a 30-yard pass from Andrew Mirmontes early in the fourth quarter, and Davis did the same earlier on a 28-yard gain in addition to making two key grabs late in the fourth quarter.

Those catches led to Brian Stuart's 2-yard touchdown run - one of three he had in the game - to tie the game at 21-all.
