UPM increases capacity in China.

UPM INCREASES CAPACITY IN CHINA. UPM, Helsinki, Finland, announced the successful start-up of a new fine paper machine at UPM's Changshu, China mill. The first reels were produced on May 24, four weeks ahead of schedule. After the investment UPM will become the biggest producer of uncoated fine papers in China. Changshu's production capacity will increase to 800,000 metric tons, of which 200,000 metric tons will be coated papers. The investment came in at the budgeted US$ 470 million.

IN OTHER UPM NEWS: the company said its parallel field-testing of forest certification standards indicates that five standards promote economic, social, and environmental forest management. Each of the five standards has a different emphasis. According to the test, there are significant differences between the various standards in the number of criteria used for any one subject area, as well as in the scope and threshold requirements. The differences occur both between standards in a country and between national standards within the same scheme. The results of the parallel testing show that UPM's average compliance is 84 % with the five standards.
