Zep and Rocco cost a combined $26,000 and were paid for by the Simi Valley Police Foundation with community support for the foundation's annual charity golf tournament. ``These dogs are a great tool and definitely a help in maintaining a safe community,'' said Dave McCormick, president of the foundation, which has been raising the money to buy the department's dogs for 14 years. ``Having canines search a building with their keen sense of smell, they are able to find suspects quicker than a person, and it's a lot safer,'' he said. Various Simi Valley officers have been dog handlers over the years, and they all seem to have stories about their dog's nose for crime-fighting. ``It's amazing their ability to find narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required. ,'' said Sgt. Stephanie Shannon, who knows from experience working with her dog, Bodo, who once found a car's windshield wiper fluid container stuffed with marijuana. Lt. Sterling Johnson had two dogs, Atlas and Charlie, who taught him ``rule number one -- always trust your dog.'' He said Charlie once found heroin hidden in a false car battery, and found a couple of pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a garage wall. Atlas once showed interest in a kitchen refrigerator, especially a large roast beef wrapped in foil in the freezer. Johnson thought for a second that his dog might be hungry, but when police thawed it out they found the meat packed with cocaine. ``If it wasn't for the police foundation, we wouldn't have these dogs today Dogs Today magazine was launched in 1990 by Burlington Publishing Company Ltd, part of Associated Newspapers. It was the brainchild of Daily Mail newspaper proprietor the late Viscount Rothermere. ,'' Johnson said. ``It shows the support of the community.'' Lt. Joe May, who heads the department's canine division, recalled being with Johnson and Charlie once during a traffic stop, when Charlie indicated there was some sort of drug in the car. May said he didn't know who to believe, the dog or the young lady who insisted she didn't have any drugs and had never used any illegal drugs. The officers couldn't find anything until they noticed the dog focused on the woman's day Woman's Day is an American magazine aimed at a female readership, covering such subjects as food, nutrition, fitness, beauty and fashion. It was first published in 1931 as a free A&P in-store menu/recipe planner, calculated to make customers buy more by giving them meal planner, which had some photographs in a plastic sheet. And sure enough, under one of the photos was a little dried out marijuana leaf. ``She didn't even realize it was there,'' May said of the woman, who was not arrested. ``It was apparently something a friend had given her years ago, and the dog found the marijuana leaf in there. That's an example of what these dogs can do.'' Roy Simon Walker (born 31 July 1940 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a British television personality & Comedian, who has worked for many years introduced the newest members of the department to the City Council. The new German shepherds were purchased to replace Hasko and Rex, two veteran dogs that retired from active duty this summer. Hasko is 8 years old and Rex is 9, and they had served in the department for more than six years, about average for the department, which has had 16 police dogs. Zep is a 2-year-old and Rocco is 3, both imported from Germany and given additional training from the Oxnard-based Inglis Police Dog Academy. The city of Simi Valley has two other dogs, Dax and Gero, for a total of four, providing canine resources throughout the week. McCormick has worked to support the department for nearly 30 years and started a group called Friends of the Canine in 1990. The group started the annual golf tournament to raise funds to help the department buy dogs, and the effort was absorbed into the department when it was founded in 1977. This year, more than 200 golfers signed up for the foundation's golf tournament at Lost Canyons Golf Club, which raised about $30,000, and the group is already planning the upcoming tournament in August. May said in addition to their role in fighting crime, the dogs provide a special tool the department uses to help people get to know the department. ``Kids like them,'' he said. ``They are great for public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment.
