``This region is happening,'' Ledford said.

In coming months, Palmdale residents will see the completion of two parks, a transportation center and a sheriff's station, Ledford said. Costing more than $90 million, the projects will provide residents with improved transportation and additional recreation as well as help draw in new businesses, Ledford said.

The two parks will add an amphitheater amphitheater (ăm`fəthē'ətər, ăm`pə–), open structure used for the exhibition of gladiatorial contests, struggles of wild beasts, sham sea battles, and similar spectacles.  at an expanded Marie Kerr Park on Rancho ran·cho

Ledford and Hinkling both noted that sheriff's deputies are scheduled to begin moving into a new $24 million Palmdale station in the fall. The new station will replace a crowded leased station in a shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  on 10th Street East at Palmdale Boulevard.

Ledford said he also expects retail interest in the city's east side to grow in 2005. The area near 47th Street East and Avenue R will see the start of development of a shopping center anchored by a Vallarta market, Ledford said.

In terms of commercial and industrial development, Ledford said the city's 120-acre Fairway Business Park on Avenue O is almost sold out. The city will next turn its attention to 120 acres at 10th Street West and Avenue M as a possible business park.

Lancaster will also see much population growth in 2005, Roberts said. He said home-building permits more than doubled last year, going from 974 in 2003 to 2,096 in 2004.

``That shows you what we have to get ready for,'' Roberts said.

The city is focusing on adding jobs, particularly along the Fox Field Corridor, the area between Fox Field Airport and the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. . Roberts said developers are in various stages of building 1 million square feet of multitenant industrial space there.

``Generate jobs to keep people off the freeway - that's our mission,'' Roberts said.

Roberts said Lancaster has added 12,000 new jobs over the past 16 years. He said one employer, Countrywide coun·try·wide

Roberts said Lancaster is committed to bolstering its law-enforcement efforts. The city spent $13.8 million on law enforcement last year and started an effort aimed at tackling crime in rental properties.

In California City, a community of about 10,000, the population is starting to grow, Adams said. In 1997, his first year as mayor, Adams said, not a single house was built in the city. Last year there were 156 homes built.

California City will see the opening of a test track for Hyundai/Kia later this month and there are plans for a commercial development anchored by a hotel near the municipal golf course.

``Our city is just beginning to grow,'' Adams said.

Hinkling noted that in addition to the sheriff's station, the county is working with city officials to open two more near fire stations in Palmdale. The stations, one on the east side and one for the west side, are not expected to be completed this year.

Hinkling said ensuring that services such as water and sewer are able to keep up with the region's growth will be a priority for Antonovich this year. The county is also working on a plan to curb flooding that occurs in Quartz Hill during storms.
