UO women get rare holiday break.

Byline: Rob Moseley The Register-Guard

When it was announced that the Pac-10 women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  tournament would be played a week later beginning in 2009, one of the many positives UO coach Bev Smith Bev Smith (born April 4 1960) is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. She has held that position since 2001, replacing controversial coach Jody Runge, and has posted an 83-69 record.  gleaned was a later start to conference play and a few more days off for her players at the holidays.

The Ducks, however, won't have to wait another season before enjoying such a break. The 2007-08 schedule that was released Tuesday includes a nonconference slate that ends with a tournament in Mexico on Dec. 18-19, while conference play doesn't begin until a Civil War road game on Dec. 29.

It's the latest start to conference play for Oregon since before the Pac-10 women's tournament was established in 2001-02. In order to keep the holidays free, the Ducks and Beavers won't play their two games on the same week, as they did last season.

"Having that rivalry game fall the first game really opens things up for us around the holiday," Smith said. "That's a bonus for this year."

The schedule opens with the Ducks at home for six of their eight November games, including two exhibitions. San Jose San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
State visits to open the regular season on Nov. 10, and NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

  • NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, the most common usage of this term
  • NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championship
  • NCAA Men's Division III Basketball Championship
qualifier Marquette comes to Eugene for a game Nov. 20.

The early stretch of home games will give a team that features six freshmen and three sophomores a chance to mature before taking to the road.

"I think this is a group that obviously needs some time to get ready, and I think we've provided them with a chance to do that," Smith said.

Oregon's first road trip is a tournament hosted by New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).  on Nov. 23-24. The trip south will be a precursor of things to come in December, when the Ducks don't play at home. They're in Portland twice, including Dec. 8 for the Pape Jam, against UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. .

The Ducks defeated the Gauchos to open the 2006-07 season, and again in the WNIT WNIT Women's National Invitation Tournament (college basketball) .

Later in December, Oregon plays at traditional power Baylor and at a tournament in Cancun, Mexico, before opening conference play at Oregon State on Dec. 29. It's the latest start to the Pac-10 schedule for the Ducks since they opened at OSU (Open Source UNIX) Refers to the Unix variants that are maintained as open source, which were primarily BSD Unix and Linux until Sun made its Solaris operating system open source in 2005.  on Jan. 5 of 2001.

"Baylor is going to be really good, and Marquette, we love having a Big East team," Smith said. "It's really gives us a look at some different styles of basketball."

The conference schedule includes a trying stretch of back-to-back road trips, to southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and then Arizona in late January.

The Beavers play in McArthur Court to conclude conference play on March 1, and the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif, will host the Pac-10 tournament March 7-10. This is the final season for the tournament in San Jose before it moves to USC's Galen Center in 2009.
