UO to host guest orchestra, pianist.

A Chamber Music Series concert and a guest artist piano recital are scheduled this week at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  School of Music.

Thursday, Beall Hall

I Musici de Montreal, described by Fanfare magazine Fanfare Magazine is a publication devoted to classical music, and in particular recordings of classical works. It has a large staff with a diverse range of expertise from the medieval through contemporary works.  as "one of the best chamber orchestras in America," will give a Chamber Music Series concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Founded by cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky, the orchestra includes 15 musicians and performs a vast repertoire extending from the Baroque to the contemporary.

UO SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The group presents more than 100 concerts per season throughout the world, including three prestigious series in Montreal. I Musici de Montreal has released 41 CDs.

Turovsky, who also performs as cello soloist with the orchestra, has performed in some of the greatest halls in the world, such as New York's Lincoln Center Lincoln Center

Thursday's program includes three selections: Chamber Symphony by Alexander Borodin Alexander Porfiryevich Borodin (Russian: Александр Порфирьевич Бородин, ; Quintet in F (orchestral version) by Anton Bruckner Noun 1. Anton Bruckner - Austrian organist and composer of romantic music (1824-1896)

; and ``Coup d'Archet'' (`Bow Strokes') by Denis Denis, king of Portugal: see Diniz.  Gougeon.

Reserved seat tickets range from $12 to $29, available in advance through the Hult Center, 682-5000, or the Erb Memorial Union ticket office, 346-4363.

UO music professor Robert Hurwitz will discuss chamber music in a free pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.

Pianist Jeffrey Jacob

Saturday, Beall Hall

Jeffrey Jacob, described as "one of the greatest performers of 20th century music," will give a free solo piano recital at 8 p.m. Saturday in Beall Concert Hall.

Jacob is a graduate of the Juilliard School Juilliard School

Internationally renowned school of the performing arts in New York, New York, U.S. It has its roots in the Institute of Musical Art (founded 1905) and a graduate school (1924) founded through an endowment from the financier Augustus D.
 and the Peabody Conservatory. Since his debut with the London Philharmonic, he has appeared with more than 20 orchestras internationally, including the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Seattle, Portland, Sao Paulo and Brazil National symphonies.

A noted proponent of contemporary music, he has performed the world premieres of works written for him by George Crumb, Vincent Persichetti, Gunther Schuller, Samuel Adler and others.

Jacob has recorded more than 50 works for solo piano and piano with orchestra, including his critically acclaimed series of CDs of the complete piano music of George Crumb and Samuel Barber, and the major works of Bela Bartok.

As a composer, he has written three symphonies, three piano concertos, and numerous works for piano and chamber ensemble. Jacob is professor of music and artist-in-residence at Saint Mary's College Saint Mary's College, at Notre Dame, Ind., near South Bend; Roman Catholic; for women; est. 1844 as St. Mary's Academy, chartered 1850 at Bertrand, Mich.; moved and chartered 1855. The school shares certain programs and facilities with the Univ. , Notre Dame, Ind.

The Eugene program includes Ethan Haimo's "Dialectics," Bartok's Sonata, Chester Biscardi's "In Time's Unfolding" and Piano Sonata by David Crumb, an assistant professor at the University of Oregon.

The featured work is Crumb's "Makrokosmos, Vol. II," subtitled "Twelve Fantasy Pieces After the Zodiac, for Amplified Piano."
