UO gets test drive with rule changes.

Byline: Bob Rodman The Register-Guard

It will be a brief visit, lasting about a week, the Ducks and their get-together with a couple of experimental rules changes.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.

It begins today when Oregon plays Baden Sports in a women's basketball exhibition game at McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N.  that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Besides the opponent, the Ducks will be greeted by a three-point field-goal line that has been extended from its regular 19 feet, 9 inches from the basket to 20 feet, 6 inches.

Also in effect for the game is a 10-second backcourt rule, requiring teams in possession of the ball to cross the center line in 10 seconds or face a violation and ensuing turnover.

Oregon will be using the NCAA-encouraged experimental rules in two more games - against Saint Francis Saint Francis, city, United States

Neither experimental rule will be used in any of Oregon's other games this season, and it will not be used during the Pac-10 Conference season, which begins for the Ducks in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  against UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

is testing out these rules to see what people think and if they help the game," said Gooch Foster, the former California coach and coordinator of women's basketball officiating for the Pac-10.

Foster also said the Women's National Invitation Tournament The Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) is a college basketball tournament with a preseason and postseason version played every year. It is operated in a similar fashion to the men's NIT.  will use the two experimental rules in its event next March.

At the end of the season, officials who called games using the experimental rules as well as the people using them and the coordinators observing them will return questionnaires to the NCAA with their impressions, Foster said.

"The NCAA rules committee will make the decision on keeping or not keeping the rules," Foster said of a June 2006 meeting. "If accepted, the rules would go into effect for the 2006-07 season."

Oregon coach Bev Smith Bev Smith (born April 4 1960) is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. She has held that position since 2001, replacing controversial coach Jody Runge, and has posted an 83-69 record. , whose team plays its second and final noncounting game today, said she favored both proposed rules.

"I like the three-point line being extended," she said, noting that the international basketball three-point line also is 20-6. "It provides a greater reward for better shooting skills."

As for the 10-second backcourt rule, Smith said it "will add some pressure, some time pressure. It should speed the game up a little bit."

Whether the 30-second shot clock would be adjusted should the 10-second backcourt rule be implemented remains to be seen, Foster said.

"They could move the shot clock to 45 seconds or 35 seconds or whatever, or not at all," she said.

Game officials are going to take closer looks at hand-checking and make more calls against displacement, especially on the ballhandler.

Baden Sports has lost games at Washington State and Idaho, but in those two defeats Stacy Clinesmith, a 5-5 point guard formerly of UC Santa Barbara and the WNBA's Seattle Storm, scored 48 points.

Carley Marshall, a 6-2 former Willamette High star who played at Utah, is expected to join Baden Sports for today's game against the Ducks.

Oregon's post players dominated in the 78-59 win over British Columbia last Monday. Gabrielle Richards, a 6-3 sophomore, led the Ducks with game highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
