UO brain project to get $3 million from defense bill.

Byline: The Register-Guard

The University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  will receive $3 million in research funding Research funding is a term generally covering any funding for scientific research, in the areas of both "hard" science and technology and social science. The term often connotes funding obtained through a competitive process, in which potential research projects are evaluated and  under a defense appropriations bill approved this week by the U.S. House and Senate.

In addition, a joint nanoscience program in which the UO is a partner will receive $5 million from the defense department, and a Eugene-based spin-off company started by a UO faculty member will get a $2 million software contract.

The appropriations bill has been sent to President Bush for his signature.

The UO's Brain, Biology and Machine Initiative will use the $3 million appropriation to continue studies into how the human brain functions, using advanced research with magnetic resonance imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), noninvasive diagnostic technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to produce cross-sectional images of organs and other internal body structures. , computational science | Computational science (or scientific computing) is the field of study concerned with constructing mathematical models and numerical solution techniques and using computers to analyze and solve scientific, social scientific and engineering problems.  and genetics. This is the sixth consecutive year the program has received an appropriation, bringing its total federal funding to $14.3 million.

The university has raised more than $40 million from grants, donations and other sources for the initiative since 2000.

Research programs also will benefit from funding for the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology Microtechnology is technology with features near one micrometre (one millionth of a metre, or 10-6 metre, or 1μm).

Half of the money will be used to develop miniature tactical energy systems for military applications, including portable power systems for personnel in the field.

The other half will go toward the development of nanomaterials and manufacturing methods for making high-performance materials, protecting health and minimizing harm to the environment.

The bill also authorizes a $2 million contract with On Time Systems for software that will more efficiently schedule complex projects such as ship construction for the U.S. Navy, potentially saving the government millions of dollars.

On Time Systems was started by UO computer science researcher Matthew Ginsberg and is based in the Riverfront Research Park.
