UO MEN'S BASKETBALL

If it wasn't Maarty Leunen Maarty Leunen (born September 3, 1985 in Vancouver, Washington) is an American college basketball player. A 6'9", 215 pound forward at the University of Oregon, he is a key reason why the Oregon Ducks reached the Elite 8 in the 2007 NCAA Division I tournament.  setting up Mitch Platt, it was Platt passing to an open shooter on the outside. Ray Schafer had one of those no-look bounce passes to a cutter going in for a layup.

What is this, the point-post offense for Oregon?

In the opening 20-minute portion of a scrimmage Saturday morning, those three post players combined for 10 assists, half of them by Leunen.

`When we switched our offense around, we did it because of Ray and Mitch,' UO coach Ernie Kent Ernie Kent (Born January 22, 1955 in Rockford, Illinois) is the current head men's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. He has been the Ducks' coach since he replaced Jerry Green after Green left for University of Tennessee after the 1996-97 season.  said. `They're such good passers for big guys. Maybe there are some things that they don't do, but (passing) was a strength. We moved our motion (offense) out more and put the ball in their hands more.'

How that works against another opponent will first be on display Wednesday at McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N. , when the Ducks play their first exhibition game against Lewis & Clark.

As the Ducks close in on that first public outing, Kent said `in some areas we're ahead of schedule offensively. We've constantly been scoring 100 points in a normal game and we were on pace to do that.

`They understand what we're trying to do offensively a lot better and obviously we can shoot it.'

In that first 20-minute segment the Yellow team that had the look of a potential starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

more than doubled up on the Green team, 58-26. That Yellow group made 22-of-32 from the field, including 8-of-12 three-pointers.

Leunen made 3-of-4 three-pointers while scoring 16 points in those 20 minutes. He also led all rebounders with six, in addition to the five assists and three steals.

`If Maarty plays like that, we'll win a lot of games,' Kent said.

The Yellow team also opened up with both of Oregon's point guards, Aaron Brooks Aaron Brooks can refer to:

, Nov. 10 against Lehigh, as part of his penalty for being ejected from a game in the Pac-10 tournament, the Ducks want Porter ready to go with the first unit.

`I just thought he was terrific in running that team,' Kent said of the 5-foot-6 freshman.

The question will be what other Ducks aren't in uniform for the counting opener. Malik Hairston Malik Hairston is an American college basketball player at the University of Oregon. The 6'6", 200 pound junior guard averaged 13 ppg and 6.1 rpg during the 2006-2007 season. High school

(groin), Joevan Catron (hip) and Churchill Odia (knee) still aren't fully practicing, and all three are expected to miss the first exhibition game.

In addition, Chamberlain Oguchi suffered a hip pointer in practice Friday and was wearing a protective pad Saturday. He was only 1-of-7 from the field, and missed his four three-point attempts in the scrimmage.

After the opening 20-minute period, the Ducks reformed the teams for a 10-minute session with a running clock, and then a five-minute period that required both teams to play zone defense, and not fast break in order to work on half-court offense against a zone.

The point guards, then on opposite teams, dominated those latter sessions. Porter had 13 of his unit's 24 points in that final 15 minutes, including 3-of-4 on threes, while Brooks countered with eight of his team's 14 points.

`We would have liked to have gone a full game here and pressed but it's hard to do with no subs,' Kent said. `For what they did, they're in a good rhythm.'
