UNOCAL TESTS THREE GAS WELLS TO DELINEATE NEW OFFSHORE THAILAND FIELD

LOS ANGELES, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. (NYSE: UCL) said today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Unocal Thailand, has completed the successful drilling and testing of three natural gas wells in the Pailin field of Block B12/27 in the Gulf of Thailand. The wells are located some 350 miles southeast of Bangkok.
The three wells, now suspended, are part of a delineation drilling program to determine the extent of the Pailin natural gas field.
Three tests were conducted on each well. The Pailin 3 well had a cumulative flow rate of 52.5 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas and 297 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate. Pailin 4 tested at 44.9 mmcfd and 1,560 bpd and Pailin 5 tested at 25.9 mmcfd and 633 bpd of condensate.
Drilling of the wells followed interpretation of an extensive 3-D seismic survey acquired in 1991 to delineate two earlier discoveries drilled on the trend in 1990.
"These results are very encouraging," said Graydon H. Laughbaum Jr., president of Unocal Thailand. "Our next phase will be to conduct further delineation drilling in early 1994 to establish the commerciality of the field."
Unocal Thailand, with a 35 percent interest in Block B12/27, is operator. Britoil (Alpha) holds a 45 percent interest, Amerada Hess 15 percent, and Motodeco, a subsidiary of Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., 5 percent. Together the companies have spent $21 million to date on exploration and drilling work in the Pailin field.
Unocal currently has seven fields under production in the Gulf of Thailand, producing natural gas and condensate equivalent to approximately 25 percent of Thailand's total energy demand. The company is also exploring onshore in northeast Thailand.
