   UNOCAL CORPORATION ORDERS A CONVEX C3880 FOR SEISMIC PROCESSING
    RICHARDSON, Texas, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Convex Computer Corporation (NYSE: CNX) today announced that Unocal Corporation has ordered an eight-processor C3880 supercomputer for seismic processing applications.  This system is part of Convex's new C3800 family, the fastest and most powerful computers offered by the company.
    "The type of computing we do at Unocal requires an extremely fast computer with a very large memory and plenty of I/O capability," said Dr. Paul R. Jones III, director of Corporate Information Services for Unocal.  "The seismic processing workload is one of the toughest things to run on a computer because of its high demands on processor speeds, memory and I/O.  In selecting a computer to meet our needs, we ran extensive benchmark tests on many different supercomputers, and the Convex system finished first in overall throughput time and price/performance."
    Jones explained that the Convex supercomputer was also selected for several other reasons.  "A definite advantage is the supercomputer's small footprint and air-cooled design that allows the system to fit into our existing computer facilities without major changes," he stated.  "In addition to all the technical and financial reasons for selecting a Convex system, we have been very impressed by the Convex support staff. Their devotion to complete customer satisfaction has been outstanding; a true partnership in many respects.  We are looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Convex."
    According to Jones, Convex's open supercomputing philosophy and adherence to computer standards will simplify the integration of the C3880 into Unocal's existing computing environment.  "We currently are converting our seismic processing software to run on UNIX-based platforms," he noted.  "Convex's UNIX-based operating system is almost identical to what we are running on our workstations.  Also, the use of 32-bit IEEE floating point numbers by Convex will make system integration much easier and will eliminate duplicate disk storage."
    All Convex systems are virtual, large memory supercomputers that are fully interactive, enabling users to log in directly from their desktop workstations rather than waiting for jobs to move through batch queues that depend on available memory.
    "Overall, we expect to see that our software will be easier to use in this type of environment, resulting in productivity gains by the seismic processors," Jones continued, "Because interactive processing allows the review of intermediate steps that are normally bypassed in batch work, we expect much higher quality output from the seismic processors."
    The new C3800 family of supercomputers features up to eight processors, two gigaflops peak performance, and four gigabytes of physical memory.  It is also the first supercomputer to be fully implemented with gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor technology, which increases the speed of the system while maintaining a low-maintenance, air-cooled package.
