UNIVERSITY TO MARK DECEMBER'S RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS.

The University's mission statement is as follows:

"California Lutheran University is a diverse, scholarly community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies.
, including Christmas concerts, a Las Posadas Posadas (pōsä`thäs), city (1991 pop. 211,297), capital of Misiones prov., NE Argentina, a port on the upper Paraná River. Its industries include woodworking and metallurgy.  procession, an Advent Vespers vespers (vĕs`pərz) [Lat.,=evening], in the Christian Church, principal evening office. In the Roman rite, vespers have consisted since the 6th cent. of a few prayers, five psalms, a lesson, the Magnificat, and an antiphon.  worship service and Kwanzaa and Hanukkah celebrations.

All the events are free, although free-will donations will be accepted at the Advent service and a series of Christmas festival concerts.

The Swedish tradition of the Sankta Lucia Festival has been a part of CLU's Christmas celebration since the early years of the university, which was founded by Scandinavian settlers in Thousand Oaks. The event is scheduled at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 in CLU's Samuelson Chapel.

Sankta Lucia, a Christian martyr who died at the stake on Dec. 13 in 304 A.D., is remembered in the festival of lights, involving five women, who represent Sankta Lucia and her attendants, and five male escorts.

The university's symphony, choirs and student soloists will present the annual Christmas Festival Concerts on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. in Samelson Chapel.

Kwanzaa, an African-American holiday honoring family, community and culture, will also be celebrated on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Preus-Brandt Forum.

The traditional Kwanzaa, started in Africa to celebrate the first fruits of the season, is observed for seven days from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 and emphasizes togetherness and unity.

A re-enactment of Las Posadas will be held Sunday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Building.

Las Posadas, an age-old re-enactment of Mary and Joseph's search for shelter and a place for the birth of the baby Jesus, is celebrated in Mexican-American communities.

The university's Hillel Jewish Student Organization will host a Hanukkah celebration on Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Student Union Building.

The university community will also host an Advent Vespers worship service featuring the CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

CLU is an object-oriented language of the Pascal family designed to support data abstraction, similar to Alphard.
 Choir under the direction of Wyant Morton on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m. Advent is the season four weeks prior to Christmas.
