UNIVERSAL TOOL SIGNS LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH MEXICO'S GRUPO TEKNO

BUTLER, Ind., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Tool & Stamping Company, Inc., the nation's largest manufacturer of jacks for automobiles and light trucks, has signed a long-term agreement to license its manufacturing and design technology to Grupo Tekno, Mexico City, D.F., Mexico.
Universal Tool, a subsidiary of Acme Metals, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ACME), Riverdale, Ill., currently supplies jacks to most major U.S.- based auto and light truck manufacturers and domestic plants of foreign manufacturers.
"We have entered into this agreement primarily to better serve Universal's customers," commented James M. Schwyn, president of Universal Tool. "Many of those customers have vehicle assembly plants in Mexico and they must meet strict Mexican content requirements for autos and light trucks manufactured there," Schwyn noted.
"Those Mexican content laws, which would be eliminated in 15 years following passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), along with high tariffs, effectively prevent significant exports now by Universal to the Mexican market. This agreement will permit us to provide Universal quality to our customers," he added.
Universal Tool is recognized for its strong design and manufacturing technology. Its efforts have produced significant weight and cost reductions for its automotive customers, and its design capabilities have helped manufacturers improve jack stowage in vehicles. Universal is also in the forefront of lightweight high strength steels and alternative materials in jacks, Schwyn noted.
Groupo Tekno, Schwyn explained, is a diversified metalworking company serving the automotive and other industries in Mexico. "We're pleased to establish a long-term relationship with this strong organization, and we're confident that, together, we can expand its share of the fast-growing Mexican market for automotive components," he added.
Initially, Schwyn added, income from the licensing agreement will not be material.
