Byline: Rachel Uranga Staff Writer

UNIVERSAL CITY - From purple doghouses to six-foot-tall gumball machines A gumball machine is a toy or commercial device, a specific type of vending machine, which dispenses gumballs, usually for a small fee paid in coins.

, a wild mix of movie props drew hundreds of curious movie fans and bargain shoppers to a sale at the Universal Studios back lot Saturday.

The kooky to commonplace props from movies like ``Seabiscuit'' to ``The Cat in the Hat'' held a certain celebrity appeal to many and was enough to make some star-gazers giddy.

``(Tobey Maguire) was probably sitting on this,'' she said.

``Reading this book,'' she went on, placing a green bound book on the stool.

``And brushing his horse with this,'' she said, lifting the horse curry over her head. ``It can all be yours for $25 - a piece of movie history.''

The public got a rare chance to pick through more than 20,000 film props at Universal Studio Stage 28, where ``Phantom of the Opera'' was filmed. Today, all items will be discounted 50 percent.

``I was like a little kid in a candy store. It's all this cool stuff to have, but not anything practical,'' said T.C. Labby, 25.

He finally settled on a brass doorbell used in ``Seabiscuit.''

``It's not like you can get this stuff anywhere,'' said Tiara Nappi, owner of the Burbank-based ``It's a Wrap.''
